Exclusive: Walmart tests iPhone item scanning at Arkansas store

Fri Aug 31, 2012 2:45pm EDT

(Reuters) - Walmart Stores Inc is testing a "Scan & Go" system that would allow shoppers to scan items using their iPhones and then quickly pay at a self-checkout counter.

Earlier this week, Walmart invited employees with Apple Inc iPhones to participate in a test at a Walmart supercenter in Rogers, Arkansas, near the company's headquarters, according to a form on the Survey Monkey website (here).

While self-checkout aisles are common at many stores, the ability to scan items with one's mobile phone while shopping is not a typical process. Supervalu Inc's Jewel-Osco chain once let shoppers use hand-held scanners and then enter that information at the checkout to pay, but that test ended years ago.

A push to get other participants, including Walmart employees' friends and family, appeared to have also been emailed this week by someone from the company's @WalmartLabs team, but could not be verified on Friday afternoon.

"We're continually testing new and innovative ways to serve customers and enhance the shopping experience in our stores," said Walmart spokesman David Tovar.

Egypt puts former presidential candidate Shafik on watch list

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt placed former presidential candidate Ahmed Shafik on a watch list at border points on Wednesday pending an investigation of alleged corruption, a judiciary source said.

"The investigative judge decided to put General Ahmed Shafik's name on the watch and travel ban lists based on investigations over his illegal allocation of 40,000 square meters of land... to Alaa and Gamal Mubarak," Judge Osama el-Saeidy said.

Shafik, last prime minister under former president Hosni Mubarak who was ousted by an uprising last year, left Egypt shortly after his Islamist opponent Mohamed Mursi was declared President in June. Mubarak's two sons Alaa and Gamal are now in prison facing other corruption charges.

Half of Americans Die With Almost No Money - Structured ...

Home ? All, Headlines

Retireee contemplates financial readinessPrior to 2009, many injured plaintiffs were most concerned with investing their settlement proceeds in the stock and real estate markets. Since 2009, I have seen a shift in focus. The largest concern by injured plaintiffs today is outliving their money. There is good cause for worry.

A recent article posted on MarketWatch cites a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research showing that 46% of American retirees have just $10,000 when they die. While people can live with limited savings, the study?s findings are a reminder of how fragile our economic conditions are if a financial emergency occurs. A structured settlement that prepares for unforeseen medical and other uncertainties during retirement means injured parties can enjoy financial peace of mind when it matters most.

Board Games Equal Quality Family Time | Millionaire Business Articles

?

By Christine George

In today?s fast-paced world, it?s too easy for your family to come home after long days at work and school simply to plug into their computers or the television. Many families hardly even find the time to eat together, and when they do they spend much of their time texting. It?s important to set aside time for the family. When you?re all focused on one activity together, you will bond and relax at the same time. One option that can bring the whole family together is with family board games.

Board games are a classic form of entertainment, and because there is such a wide range of board games to choose from, you can ensure that you?ll find something that is entertaining for the whole family. You can choose family board games which can be completed in less than half an hour if everyone is busy with homework, or you could choose a longer game that will take up the better part of a lazy, rainy afternoon. Be sure to look at the intended ages and skill level of board games to find something that?s age-appropriate for your family, so that they don?t get frustrated.

Some family board games are based almost entirely on luck or chance, such as those which are played with the roll of the dice. Others will require strategy and skill to complete. These are considered to be good for children, because they encourage critical, strategic thinking. This makes them a healthier activity than plugging into computer games instead. While you play together as a family, you can get competitive as you wish, or spend the time to talk about your days in between rounds of the game. There?s nothing better than spending time together over a friendly round of games as a family.

Online, you?ll find a range of different family board games to choose from. Chess is one of the most timeless and classic games to play, while a wooden or marble chess set makes a timeless piece of decoration as well. Mahjong is a Chinese game which involves skill, calculation, and strategy. It is usually played by four players, making it perfect for family board game night. Backgammon is another board game which is available, involving both luck and strategy for an entertaining experience. These are family classics which have been played for centuries, and continue to delight players of all ages to this day.

Mars Rover Belts Out Will.i.am Song From Red Planet in Cosmic First

The first song ever played from Mars was broadcast today (Aug. 28) from NASA's Curiosity rover on the Red Planet.

The concert represented the world premiere of the appropriately named song "Reach for the Stars," by rapper and songwriter will.i.am. It was beamed via radio signal about 150 million miles (241 million km) back to Earth from Curiosity's landing spot on Mars' Gale Crater at 1 p.m. PDT (4 p.m. EDT).

"The point of the song is to remind people ? that anything is possible if you discipline yourself and dedicate yourself and stand for something," the musician said today from Curiosity's mission control center at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.

The music arrived there during an educational event held for students from the Los Angeles neighborhood where will.i.am grew up.

"There's no words to explain how amazing this is," will.i.am. said. "These kids here are from Boyle Heights, the same neighborhood I'm from. We don't have to just end up in the 'hood. But it's a hard thing. The hardest thing is discipline."

Students and rocket scientists alike bobbed their heads and clapped as the song's strains came back to Earth.

"Why do they say the sky is the limit
When we have put footprints on the moon
And I know the sky may be high
But baby it ain't really that high
And I know that Mars might be far
But baby it ain't really that far
Let's reach for the stars"

Also onhand at the event was former NASA astronaut Leland Melvin, now the agency's associate administrator for education.

"Never give up," Melvin said. "People told me that I couldn't be an astronaut. Whatever you want to be, whatever you dream, you can do, if you put your mind to it."

The $2.5 billion Curiosity landed on Mars Aug. 5 (PDT) after launching in November of last year. The song was loaded onto the rover before its departure from Earth, and will.i.am, part of the hip-hop group The Black-Eyed Peas, was at JPL in person to watch Curiosity land.

The car-size rover is embarking on a two-year mission to search for signs that the Red Planet may have ever been habitable to microbial life.

Oldest Insects Ever Found In Amber, 230 Million Years Old Shatters

?Amber is an extremely valuable tool for paleontologists because it preserves specimens with microscopic fidelity, allowing uniquely accurate estimates of the amount of evolutionary change over millions of years,? said corresponding author David Grimaldi, a curator in the American Museum of Natural History?s Division of Invertebrate Zoology and a world authority on amber and fossil arthropods

Credit: University of G?ttingen / Alexander Schmidt.

Globules of fossilized resin are typically called amber. Amber ranges in age from the Carboniferous (about 340 million years ago) to about 40,000 years ago, and has been produced by myriad plants, from tree ferns to flowering trees, but predominantly by conifers. Even though arthropods are more than 400 million years old, until now, the oldest record of the animals in amber dates to about 130 million years. The newly discovered arthropods break that mold with an age of 230 million years. They are the first arthropods to be found in amber from the Triassic Period.

Triassic amber drops from the Dolomites

Credit: ?University of Padua / Stefano Castelli

The amber droplets, most between 2-6 millimeters long, were buried in outcrops high in the Dolomite Alps of northeastern Italy and excavated by Eugenio Ragazzi and Guido Roghi of the University of Padova. About 70,000 of the miniscule droplets were screened for inclusions ?encased animal and plant material?by a team of German scientists led by Alexander Schmidt, of?Georg-August University, G?ttingen, resulting in the discovery of the three arthropods. The tiny arthropods were studied by Grimaldi and Evert Lindquist, an expert on gall mites at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Ottawa.

Two of the specimens are new species of mites, named Triasacarus fedelei and Ampezzoa triassica. They are the oldest fossils in an extremely specialized group called Eriophyoidea that has about 3,500 living species, all of which feed on plants and sometimes form abnormal growth called ?galls.? The ancient gall mites are surprisingly similar to ones seen today.
'

Credit:?Photo: American Museum of Natural History / David Grimaldi

?You would think that by going back to the Triassic you?d find a transitional form of gall mite, but no,? Grimaldi said. ?Even 230 million years ago, all of the distinguishing features of this family were there?a long, segmented body; only two pairs of legs instead of the usual four found in mites; unique feather claws, and mouthparts.?

The ancient mites likely fed on the leaves of the tree that ultimately preserved them, a conifer in the extinct family Cheirolepidiaceae. Although about 97 percent of today?s gall mites feed on flowering plants, Triasacarus fedelei and Ampezzoa triassica existed prior to the appearance and rapid radiation of flowering plants. This finding reveals the evolutionary endurance of the mites.

?We now know that gall mites are very adaptable,? Grimaldi said. ?When flowering plants entered the scene, these mites shifted their feeding habits, and today, only 3 percent of the species live on conifers. This shows how gall mites tracked plants in time and evolved with their hosts.?

The third amber specimen, a fly, cannot be identified because, outside of the insect?s antennae, its body parts were not well preserved. But now that the researchers have shown that amber preserved Triassic arthropods, they are eager to find more specimens.

?There was a huge change in the flora and fauna in the Triassic because it was right after one of the most profound mass extinctions in history, at the end of the Permian,? Grimaldi said. ?It?s an important time to study if you want to know how life evolved.?

This research was funded by the German Initiative of Excellence. Other authors include Saskia Jancke, of the Natural History Museum in Berlin; Paul Nascimbene, American Museum of Natural History; Kerstin Schmidt, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Germany; and Torsten Wappler, University of Bonn, Germany.

Israel calls Iran the greatest nuclear threat

(AP) ? Arab nations and Israel are heading for a confrontation at a 154-nation nuclear meeting next month over an Arab initiative to criticize Israel's secretive atomic program.

Israel is universally assumed to have nuclear arms, and documents for the International Atomic Energy Agency's annual general conference show the Arabs seeking Israel's censure at that meeting.

The Arabs say Israel is thwarting "all initiatives to free the region of the Middle East of ... of nuclear weapons." The Jewish state warns of a sideshow that deflects attention from what it says is "Iran's attempt to divert the attention of the international community ... (from) its quest for nuclear weapons."

Iran denies wanting such arms and says all its nuclear activities are peaceful.

Why You Need an Email Address Using Your Own Domain Name ...

Business owners benefit greatly by using an email address that contains the name of their business. Right away, you are seen as professional. If a business owner is not serious enough to register their own domain name and set up their own email address, how serious are they about their business? A personalised email address is also an easy way for existing clients and potential customers to remember the electronic mail address without having to look through their diaries and digital organisers. Today, it is possible to customise an online mail address as long as it follows the right format. Domain names can be included for fast recall and to achieve a more professional business email address. By choosing an appropriate domain name you can make your electronic mail address look more professional and make it easier to remember. For businesses, utilising your own domain name is strongly recommended rather than using a free email service. Besides looking unprofessional, another disadvantage of using a free email service is you risk getting spam messages in your inbox and you risk your email address being used by fraudulent people to send spam emails. Creating a unique email address containing your domain name can be done in two ways. First, set up dedicated hosting for your specific domain name. What this means is hosting the domain name on a particular server. Doing this will allow you to have your own portion of the disk space for each mail account. Another option is to set up email forwarding using your domain name. Use this option if you want to continue using your existing email account. With email forwarding, messages you receive from your hosted email account will be automatically sent to your current account. Web hosting companies normally offer packages that allow customers to create one or several email addresses using their domain name. You can do this on your own using the online control panel provided by your hosting company. The direct URL of the control panel should be provided to you by the company but if this is not possible, ask your web hosting company for help with setting up your email addresses. To create your specific email address via your web hosting company, you will need to enter a username, password and amount of space you want for your email account. Remember, though, that the space you specify here already forms part of the total disk space allocated to you in your hosting package. Hosting companies can allow multiple or even unlimited email accounts these days but if you?re in business, it would be beneficial to limit it to just two or three that you can use on a regular basis. For security reasons, it?s crucial not to share your password with anybody unless you have a trusted assistant who manages your emails and performs other administrative tasks on your behalf. You need to protect your inbox and even your website from various internet threats and attacks. By utilising a hosted domain name, you also have the freedom to change internet service providers (ISPs) without your clients being aware of it because you still retain your email address. Before setting up your account, an important point to keep in mind is that you need to register your domain name first. In this way, nobody else can claim it and you can freely use it when creating your unique email addresses.

Q. Choosing an Internet Hosting Package

The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance - it is the illusion of knowledge.Daniel J. Boorstin (1914 - )Our choice of an internet hosting service, defined by Wikipedia asAn Internet hosting service is a service that runs Internet servers, allowing organizations and individuals to serve content to the Internetis just such a case in point. The GCSE grading scandal: the legal challenge begins | Liberal ...

by Paul Cotterill ? ?
9:45 am - August 26th 2012

It?s encouraging that several bodies, including the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), are considering legal action over the GCSE grading scandal.

The ASCL has already set out what aspect of the scandal such action may target

We?re examining whether this is hitting any particular groups of young people that are covered by the equal opportunities legislation.

This is because it is looking increasingly likely that the effects of the late grade boundary changes have been felt most by pupils getting D rather than the Cs they should/would have had, and disproportionate number of these pupils will come from poorer backgrounds and from ethnic minorities.

If this does turn out the be case, the question of precisely what ?equal opportunities legislation? has been breached by the government.

Fortunately, and with what now looks like remarkable foresight, legislation passed in the dying days of the last Labour government would seem ? at least to this lay observer ? to fit the bill pretty well.

Section 96 para 1 of the Equality Act (2010) covers ?qualification bodies?, and states:

A qualifications body (A) must not discriminate against a person (B)?

(a) in the arrangements A makes for deciding upon whom to confer a relevant qualification;

(b) as to the terms on which it is prepared to confer a relevant qualification on B;

(c) by not conferring a relevant qualification on B.

Which is nice.

How To Get Involved In Daily Fantasy Basketball

The popularity of Basketball has been steadily growing in international markets for a number of years. While the sport has been extremely popular in the United States for decades, many international stars in the NBA have brought this beloved game to far corners of the globe. There are far more international players (and superstars) in the NBA than ever before, and analysts make the argument it has benefitted the game tremendously as more players vie for contracts making the playing field that much more talented.

This has also made basketball a lot more exciting for fans. Right now there is more talent than ever before being merged on powerhouse teams with All-Star lineups, and this off-season in particular has fans foaming at the mouth for the season to start and final lineups to be announced. Big names are signing small contracts to play on these powerhouse teams and the unexpected seems to be happening weekly. This has made being a fan tremendously more exciting and has subsequently made fantasy leagues very interesting.

Superstars are coming off the bench and lesser known players are putting up All-Star numbers. Predicting who will be atop the leader board in any given points category has also become increasingly difficult and fantasy leagues are filled with rookie winners and fantasy team owners who seem to win from little other than luck alone! Therefore getting involved in a fantasy basketball league is easier and more fun than ever before, and many people with limited sports knowledge are beating out seasoned veterans leaving bruised egos in the wake of these exciting developments.

Getting involved in a fantasy sports league is also much easier than ever before as the popularity of the sport has increased the number of opportunities to get involved. While once upon a time you had to know a group of friends and a trustworthy stat keeper to maintain and run a league, getting involved is as easy as visiting a specific website. Certain sites are dedicated solely to providing you with a number of options for putting your sports knowledge to the test. If your sports fantasy knowledge is minimal at best, know there are tutorials and instructional videos you can watch that will help you get the ball rolling.

These factors have subsequently made fantasy basketball a lot more popular as well, and specific websites offer you a variety of formats to suit your level of interest. Daily fantasy basketball leagues are particularly exciting because they allow you to really sink your teeth into the team management roll. On the other hand there are league formats that are more passive in nature and require less proactive involvement on the team manager's part. The NBA is an exciting league and the upcoming seasons will be one to remember. Getting involved in a fantasy league is a great way to stay in the loop and have fun at the same time while hopefully winning some terrific prizes and most importantly of all; bragging rights.

Refinery blast kills 26 in Venezuela, dozens hurt

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? A huge explosion rocked Venezuela's biggest oil refinery and unleashed a ferocious fire on Saturday, killing at least 26 people and injuring more than 80 others in one of the deadliest disasters ever to hit the country's key oil industry.

Balls of fire rose over the Amuay refinery, among the largest in the world, in video posted on the Internet by people who were nearby at the time. Government officials pledged to restart the refinery within two days and said the country has plenty of fuel supplies on hand to meet its domestic needs as well as its export commitments.

At least 86 people were injured, nine of them seriously, Health Minister Eugenia Sader said at a hospital where the wounded were taken. She said 77 people suffered light injuries and were released.

Officials said those killed included a 10-year-old boy, and that 17 of the 26 victims were National Guard troops stationed at a post next to the refinery.

President Hugo Chavez declared three days of mourning.

"This affects all of us," Chavez said by phone on state television. "It's very sad, very painful."

Chavez said he ordered a "deep investigation" to determine what caused the explosion.

Vice President Elias Jaua, who traveled to the area in western Venezuela, said the authorities tried "to save the greatest number of lives."

Officials said firefighters had controlled the flames at the refinery on the Paraguana Peninsula, where clouds of dark smoke still billowed in the afternoon.

The blast occurred about 1:15 a.m. when a gas leak created a cloud that ignited, Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said. He said an adjacent National Guard post was severely damaged by the blast, along with nearby homes.

"That gas generated a cloud that later exploded and has caused fires in at least two tanks of the refinery and surrounding areas," Ramirez said. "The blast wave was of a significant magnitude."

Images in the early hours after the explosion showed the flames casting an orange glow against the night sky. One photograph showed an injured man being wheeled away on a stretcher.

Some people in surrounding areas were evacuated or fled, officials said.

Ramirez said a panel of investigators was being formed to probe the cause of the gas leak. A prosecutor was appointed to lead the investigation and troops were deployed to the area.

The explosion hit an area of storage tanks in the refinery, and nine of the tanks were damaged, Ramirez said.

"All of the events happened very quickly," Ramirez said. "When we got here in the middle of the night, at 3 or 3:30 in the morning, the fire was at its peak."

He said supplies of fuel had been cut off to part of the refinery, and that the fire had been brought under control, though the flames continued to burn up fuel in some of the tanks. Firefighters, he said, were using foam to extinguish the flames in one of the remaining tanks.

"This regrettable and sad event is controlled, is under control," Ramirez said on television, while plumes of smoke continued to billow.

Amuay is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the two refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline. Venezuela is a major supplier of oil to the U.S. and a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

Ramirez said the state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA should be able to "restart operations in a maximum of two days."

"We want to tell the country that we have sufficient inventories of fuel. We have 10 days of inventory of fuel," Ramirez said. He said the country's other refineries were operating at full capacity and would be able to "deal with any situation in our domestic market. ... In that sense, we won't have major effects."

An official of the state oil company, known as PDVSA, said the country also has enough supplies on hand to guarantee its international supply commitments. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

In terms of international oil markets, the disaster is not likely to cause much of a ripple, said Jason Schenker, an energy analyst and president of Austin, Texas-based Prestige Economics LLC. Noting that other refinery accidents and shutdowns regularly occur around the world, he said: "There's likely to be relatively limited impact on global crude or product pricing."

"The real tragedy," he said, "is that these events continue to happen, not just in Venezuela but everywhere. It is a dangerous business."

While the cause of Saturday's disaster remains unclear, some oil workers and critics of Chavez's government have recently pointed to increasing numbers of smaller accidents and spills as an indication of problems within the state-run company.

"This tragedy is probably the worst one the oil industry has had in many years. Accidents happen, of course, although the problem with PDVSA is the inordinate amount of accidents that have taken place during the last years," said Gustavo Coronel, an energy consultant and former executive of PDVSA. Considering that record overall, Coronel said, "we are not talking about bad luck but about lack of maintenance and inept management."

Ivan Freites, a labor leader and employee who has worked at the refinery for 29 years, said workers had repeatedly alerted PDVSA officials to problems that they feared could lead to an accident.

"It's the first time that we see something like this in Venezuela, and it's not a coincidence because we've been complaining about problems and risks, including fires, broken pipes and a lack of spare parts," Freites said in a telephone interview on Saturday from an area located a few miles (kilometers) from the refinery.

"We warned that something was going to happen, a catastrophic event," said Freites, secretary general of a 1,200-member union of oil and natural gas industry workers in Falcon state.

Deadly explosions at pipelines and refineries have taken a toll over the years in various countries, in some instances claiming hundreds of lives.

In one deadly incident in Venezuela in 1993, a natural gas pipeline exploded beneath a highway in Las Tejerias, engulfing a passenger bus and cars. Officials said 36 people were killed.

Opposition leader Henrique Capriles, who is challenging Chavez in the country's Oct. 7 presidential election, expressed condolences to the victims and their families.

"We Venezuelans are one, and we grow in the face of this type of situations," Capriles said.

Centenarian sister helps Sardinian siblings set world record

Nine Sardinians were recognized Wednesday as the oldest living siblings, with a combined age of 818. The eldest sister celebrated her 105th birthday today.

By Nick Squires,?Correspondent / August 22, 2012

Could the rugged Mediterranean island of Sardinia harbor the secret to a long life? Experts increasingly think so.

The island has long had a reputation for longevity, with one of the highest rates of centenarians in the world. Now that reputation has been further bolstered with the discovery of nine elderly brothers and sisters who have a combined age of 818 years.

The Melis siblings were officially recognized this week by Guinness World Records?as the world?s oldest living siblings.

It can surely only be a matter of time before ?The Sardinian Diet? becomes the next big thing among Hollywood stars and well-heeled health enthusiasts.

All but two of the siblings live in the village of Perdasdefogu in a mountainous region of the island known as the Barbagia, which in the past was famed for banditry, feuding, and kidnapping.

Its unforgiving terrain has repelled outside invaders since pre-Roman times, ensuring a distinct gene pool that appears to have passed on longevity from generation to generation.

The Melis family ascribes its extraordinarily long lives to plenty of exercise ? walking up and down precipitous slopes to feed its sheep and goats, for instance ? as well as a healthy diet based around bread, cheese and pasta, all locally produced. ?

Family members speak particularly highly of minestrone soup, which is filling but low in fat and full of greens. The red wine they drink is unusually high in antioxidants, experts have found.

Being surrounded by around 150 children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren also keeps them young, they say.

The oldest of the siblings, Consolata, celebrated her 105th birthday today, while the ?baby? of the family, Mafalda, is a comparatively sprightly 78 years old.

?In my day women had to do all the domestic work, going to the standpipe to get water and to the river to wash the clothes. My grandchildren have washing machines and vacuum cleaners so when they say 'I?m so stressed,' I just can?t understand it,? Consolata told Italy?s daily Corriere della Sera.

One of the sisters, Claudina, 99, keeps in shape by walking to and from church every day, while a brother, Adolfo, 89, still works in a bar in the village and tends vegetables in his garden.

It was a family friend who approached Guinness claiming that the Melis siblings were probably the oldest in the world.

Guinness verified the claim in conjunction with the Gerontology Research Group in the US and announced the finding this week.

?The Mediterranean lifestyle is always held up as being beneficial to a long, healthy life, and Italians in particular feature prominently in the list of supercentenarians and centenarians,? said Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief for Guinness World Records.

?Seven out of the 70 people alive over the age of 110 are Italian, for example, and the world's second-oldest living person is the Italy-born Dina Manfredini, who was born in Emilia-Romagna," Mr. Glenday noted, adding that Ms. Manfredini now lives in the US.

?With all longevity records, genes and lifestyle are paramount, but luck plays a big part ? avoiding accidents and falls, and so on ? so to have such a large number of living siblings with an average age of more than 90 years is incredibly rare.??

The secret of Sardinians? long life is being studied by a scientific project called AKeA ? an acronym for ?A kent? annos,? a traditional toast in the Sardinian language which means ?May you live to 100 years.?

Scientists believe genetics play a key role in Sardinians? longevity ? the same surnames crop up again and again in the list of long-living islanders, said Luca Deiana, a professor of clinical biochemistry from the University of Sassari.

The only other region in the world that can match Sardinia for the proportion of centenarians is the island of Okinawa in Japan.

Common Real Estate Disputes an Attorney Can Hel With - www ...

Last updated 20 hours ago

Real estate disputes can quickly spiral into contentious situations. With potentially large sums of money and property at stake, the ability to amicably resolve these issues can deteriorate in short order. The complex legal terminology that often accompanies these matters can further detail any attempts to come to an agreement. To avoid the financial and emotional stress that may result from a real estate dispute, contact a Orlando?real estate attorney regarding your legal options.

Mortgage Disputes

Mortgage loans frequently exchange hands from one servicer to another, increasing the risk of paperwork mistakes. The sheer volume of loans may cause confusion for under-trained servicer employees. These factors can then translate into misapplied late fees or incorrectly documented missing payments. If you have been making your mortgage payments on time but have been assessed a late or missing payment fee, you should immediately contact a foreclosure attorney. Attempting to file a dispute with your mortgage servicer may take weeks or months to revolve. In the meantime, you may continue to incur additional fees. You may even be served with a foreclosure notice if your servicer continues to make mistakes regarding your payment status.

Boundary Disputes

Boundary disputes are among the most frequently cited real estate dispute situations. Many times these circumstances can break down into spiteful conflicts, pitting one neighbor against another. Don?t let a boundary dispute disrupt your family?s peace of mind and quality of living. A real estate attorney can deflect any malicious behavior put forth by your neighbor and ensure that you are given every legal means possible to have your boundary dispute resolved quickly and fairly.

Timeshare Disputes

Many times individuals decide that they no longer want to be part of a timeshare agreement. Whether because of substandard construction, hidden fees, or other legal grounds, you have the right to dissolve your contract. However, you may also be forced to contend with lengthy and expensive legal proceedings should you choose to handle this situation on your own. Instead, contact a real estate attorney to manage your timeshare dispute.

Pierce & Associates, P.L. provides legal services in all areas of real estate law for clients living in the greater Orlando region. To speak with?real estate law attorney, please call our offices at (321) 418-3474.

JORDAN TATE SCREENWRITER: HOW TO WRITE A FILM ...

?Film Treatments

How to write a film treatment

Generally speaking, a film's treatment is similar to that of an overview or synopsis of the film idea. It usually ranges from 8 to 15 pages and includes all the important conceptual elements, structured in 3-5 acts, each with a beginning, middle and end. When you submit your script, your treatment will often be the first document to be glanced over. If the main concept is enjoyable and your treatment is well written maybe, just maybe, your script will make it into the hands of the "professional script reader". This is an important element of screenwriting which you should know about. When you submit your script to producers, you will not be submitting your scripts to the major decision makers first. Your script will first have to pass through a filter that these large production companies have put in place.

Large production companies hire professional readers who go through the many scripts the company receives on a daily basis and they weed the bad options out. Sometimes the professional reader will reject a script if it's not formatted or packaged properly. Or more often, they will reject poorly written scripts or scripts with little or no commercial value. They can often decide these factors within a few short minutes or sometimes even seconds after taking a quick browse through your treatment.

If your treatment is well composed, interesting and has commercial potential, the professional reader may actually take a look through your script. If your script manages to capture their interest, they might then take a full read though it. After this point, if they still feel strongly towards it, they will forward your script to their manager or a producer who will then take another read through the script.

How hard is it to get your script past the professional reader? Well, it's really not that hard. While professional readers say they usually reject 95% of the scripts that come across their desks, this doesn't provide us with any insight into how much pure unprofessional junk they read.

Imagine you asked 10 of your friends to write you a short story which would be about 15 pages long. Most of these people would have limited or little writing experience. They may love the experience of writing and they may even love their little 15 page story. However, just because they love their work it doesn't mean that the general audience will. Imagine how many of your friends' short stories you would reject right away. Probably about 60%. If you were looking at publishing only 1 of them, you would probably find that some lacked proper structure, others were printed in fonts that were too small or too hard to read, while others had stories which were simply not believable or too boring and personal.

Out of the 40% that remain, even if the stories are good, you will be able to knock off many more because they do not have enough commercial potential, perhaps because they are not conflict-ridden enough or perhaps have too much violence or sexual content.

A film treatment states how the audience will experience the film. It's important to write treatments in an active voice and avoid the use of hyperbole (such as "this unique film will explore" etc). When writing treatments you want your audience to be able to visualize your film. You will want to write in present tense and provide an overview of the characters, locations and details of the film. You can write your treatment creatively. The purpose of a treatment is to allow your audience to smell, taste and experience your environment. Reading a treatment (second only to reading a full script) is the closest written equivalent to the look of your film.

That being said, it's important to leave out technical information. In a script you may include camera information if necessary (movement etc), but in a treatment you'll want to keep it limited to non-technical information.

Similarly, you won't want your treatment to have an editorial tone. Rather than saying things like:

This film will dive into the subject of gender relations in the hip hop community. The flm will focus on the relationship between two nemeses; Mr. Bugz and Mrs DJ Spinna.

Instead say:

"Mr. Bugz B and Mrs DJ Spinna stand toe to toe in front of their microphones. Mr. Bugz rhymes and misogynistic rhyme stating "we don't want no ugly girls in here tonight" to which Mrs DJ Spinna retaliates with a rhyme mocking Mr. Bugs unusually large ears. The crowd goes wild. Mr Bugz continues, but with less steam. The insult has touched on a vulnerable part of his identity."

Again, it's important to stress that you need to avoid editorial writing when writing treatments and instead speak in an active and present voice. Similarly, you should avoid using words and phrases like

"Next we see" - Don't start sentences with "we see". Tell the audience what they see without introducing your sentence with "we see".

Try to avoid passive words such as: Should, will, might and maybe.

Passive words evoke less emotion and take the audience out of the story. Feel free to use dialogue snippets, descriptions of the environment and characters. Essentially use any non-technical element that helps you paint as colourful of a picture as possible.

A treatment helps investors visualize your idea in a personal manner. Treatments don't have a "business feel" to them. They sound dramatic, personal and honest.

Good luck!

OUPblog ? Blog Archive ? Money and politics: A look behind the news

By Louis Ren? Beres

In the final months of a presidential election campaign, the prevailing political talk, amid an ambience of cynicism and indignation, turns unhesitatingly to money. American voters understand that economics and politics remain interpenetrating. Whatever happens in either one of these seemingly discrete realms, especially when money is involved, more or less substantially impacts the other.

Still, if scholars and politicos were to look behind the talk, beyond the ritualized economic and political orthodoxies of the moment, they could uncover something genuinely vital, stunningly obvious, but somehow also still neglected. The core problems of generalized economic weakness and expanding social inequality, they would discover, are not truly fiscal, but human.

Personal consumption comprises an overwhelmingly disproportionate amount of the GDP growth rate. By itself, however, this is not newsworthy. Yet by simple deduction, Wall Street?s volatility and fragility, and therefore America?s politics and elections, are ultimately a product of a society that ?requires? hyper-consumption.

Below the tangible surfaces of timeless and widespread manipulations, America?s underlying market difficulties are rooted in a deep dependence upon Main Street?s craving for goods. From the standpoint of any needed economic recovery, and therefore also the political fortunes of our current presidential candidates, this skillfully choreographed pattern of desire will always prove to be relevant, or even determinative. Depending upon the particular candidate and political party, of course, it will turn out to be more or less helpful.

We Americans are presumed to be what we buy. There is nothing remotely controversial about this demeaning assertion. Earlier, Adam Smith and Thorsten Veblen, among others, established the blurry nexus between money and self-esteem as an integral part of their respective economic theories. This corrosive linkage is now indispensable to our political campaigns, both at the utilitarian level of successfully marketing each candidate to the most voters, and also with regard to each candidate?s explicitly wealth enhancing or income-related promises.

This crude orientation to money and politics isn?t distinctly American. Rather, the universal problem of hyper-consumption is the embarrassing foolishness of linking feelings of self-worth to ownership of shiny goods. In any society where one?s perceived value is determined by observable consumption, the derivative economy and polity are inevitably built upon sand.

"'Everybody does it' - the national excuse" by Albert Levering in Puck, 1910. Source: Library of Congress.

Naturally, this is not what we hear from the candidates, ?experts,? learned economists, bankers, or ever-twisting corporate chiefs. Assuredly, after all, it isn?t in their job description to inquire beyond hard, measurable, and quotable fiscal calculations. Still, if we should care to look more closely, it would become plain that the American voter has as much to learn about money and politics from Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, as from Karl Marx and John Maynard Keynes.

Until we can finally get a handle on the insatiable public need for ?stuff? as validation, our economic and political problems will not go away. And even if we could somehow ?fix? current problems by further encouraging consumption ? a stance now taken by both presidential candidates ? exactly what sort of society would we be sustaining?

What kind of economy and society must rely on crude coaxing and engineered purchasing to preserve its life-saving buoyancy? In the 19th century, Ralph Waldo Emerson had spoken prophetically of ?self-reliance.? American Transcendentalist thinkers had readily understood that a foolish ?reliance upon property? was the devastating but still-avoidable result of ?a want of self reliance.?

Today, living insecurely amid a humiliating barrage of advertising jingles, delirious collectivism, and embarrassingly empty witticisms, the apprehensive American voter sorely wants to project a ?correct? image. Each tentative claim to self-worth must be founded upon having the ?right stuff.? Hyper-consumption, hence politics and money, are never fundamentally about greed; rather, they are about the pleasingly enhanced image of personal importance that can presumably be conferred by glamorous houses, cars, and assorted electronic toys.

The demeaning consumer message of our polity and mass society is everywhere, even in the universities. Today, almost all higher education in America has become fiercely-commercial, proudly anti-intellectual, and openly vocational, obsequiously dumbed-down by faculties who are running scared from no-longer literate university administrations. In America, we ceremoniously graduate newly minted Ph.D.s, MDs, JDs and MBA?s who know only how to progress in their own chosen fields. They may, of course, turn out to be perfectly good teachers, doctors, lawyers, and accountants, but they shall always remain no more than trained. Through no fault of their own, they will never really have been educated.

On the Capitol steps, Washington, D.C. Under the auspices of the Bureau of University Travel and the National Capital School Visitors' Council, over 200 high school students chosen for their intellectual alertness visited Washington for a week. Photo by Marjory Collins, 1942. Source: Library of Congress.

Do we want a genuinely fair and democratic society? Do we prefer that our presidential candidates be animated by more than a visceral political inclination to pledge greater personal wealth to every voter? If so, then we must first reorient our American system from its thoroughly corrupted ambience of mass taste, and toward a more conscientiously cultivated environment of thought and feeling.

Adam Smith had argued, in his Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776), that a system of ?perfect liberty? could never be based upon ?mean rapacity? and ?needless? consumption. On the contrary, said Smith, who remains a fashionable mainstay of conservatives, the laws of the market, driven by competition and a consequent ?self-regulation,? demand a principled disdain for all vanity-driven consumption. For Adam Smith, ?conspicuous consumption? ? a phrase that would be used far more devastatingly later by Thorsten Veblen ? could never be a proper motor of economic or social improvement, yet it is now offered as a solution to economic woes and an inducement for political support.

Wall Street and Washington remain wholly dependent upon the self-destructive imitations of mass society. Such a mutually corrosive dependence can never succeed, either in economics or in politics. Instead, we must first create conditions whereby each American can somehow feel important and alive without abjectly surrendering to manufactured images of power and status. If we fail, the most blatantly injurious connections between money and politics will continue to proliferate.

Without appropriately altered conditions, millions of Americans will continue to seek refuge from the excruciating emptiness of daily life in mind-numbing music, mountains of drugs, and oceans of alcohol. Insidiously, without any political impediments, the resultant brew will swell and overflow, drowning entire epochs of political theory, art, literature, and even sacred poetry.

Despite the endless infusions of money into politics, America is now a palpably unhappy society, one where the citizens can rarely find authentic meaning or personal satisfaction within themselves. Only this socially crushed individualism can become the starting point for repairing what is fundamentally wrong with our politics and society. All else, including fiscal contaminations of democratic politics, is epiphenomenal. All else is merely what philosophers, since Plato, have called ?shadows of reality.?

Were he alive today, Plato would recognize our problems of money and politics as a ?sickness of the soul.? The solution to these problems, he would have understood, is not simply to elect new leaders, or identify additional statutory limits on political contributions and donations. Instead, it must be to make the souls of the citizens better.

Witnesses: Tajik troops open fire on protesters

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan (AP) ? Tajikistan government troops opened fire Wednesday on a crowd protesting the unexplained killing of an influential local leader in an eastern town, local residents say.

Witnesses say two people were reportedly injured after hundreds gathered in front of Khorog regional headquarters to demand an explanation for the overnight death of Imumnazar Imumnazarov, a former warlord during the country's civil war in the 1990s.

Authorities would not comment on the incident when contacted by The Associated Press. While organized crime is known to be rife in remote areas of Tajikistan, many analysts believe the government has launched a crackdown on former warlords as a pretext for stamping its authority on areas of the country not entirely under its control.

The renewed instability in the remote Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous province, which shares a long border with Afghanistan, comes weeks after armed clashes between troops and local armed groups left around 50 people dead.

Danger of further conflict appeared to have been forestalled earlier this month by armed groups agreeing to hand over hundreds of weapons.

This impoverished ex-Soviet nation still bears the scars of the five-year civil war that is estimated to have killed more than 60,000 people. Tajikistan's location also makes it strategically important to the U.S. war effort in Afghanistan as an important supplies route.

Imumnazarov ? one of four former warlords active during the civil war ? was sought with the four others by authorities last month on charges including drug and tobacco smuggling. Two of the men surrendered to authorities earlier this month, but Imumnazarov and another man remained at large.

The hunt was ostensibly sparked by last month's murder of Abdullo Nazarov, a general in Tajikistan's national intelligence service, which authorities blamed on one of the warlords, Tolib Ayombekov, who has already surrendered.

Imumnazarov's brother and other members of his entourage were injured in the armed attack on his home Tuesday night. Due to injuries sustained during the war, Imumnazarov was incapacitated at the time, and also bed-ridden with diabetes.

Residents in Khorog said hundreds of mostly young people attending his funeral gathered at the regional administration building on Wednesday to allege the government's involvement in the killing.

Government forces opened fire after some threw stones at the building, wounding at least two people in the legs, eyewitnesses said.

Telephone connections to Khorog were severed following the events.

Sony Mobile Communications Announces New Operational ...

LONDON, August 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

Sony Mobile Communications AB ("Sony Mobile") today announced that it is altering the global operational structure of its development sites in Tokyo, Japan, Lund, Sweden and Beijing, China. In October 2012, Sony Mobile will move its corporate headquarters and certain other functions from Lund, Sweden, to Tokyo, Japan. Sony Mobile has also redefined the roles and responsibilities of each major development site to leverage the strengths of each respective site. These measures aim to enhance operational and development capabilities of Sony Mobile such as time to market efficiency, streamline supply chain management and drive greater integration with the wider Sony group. ?

"Sony has identified the mobile business as one of its core businesses and the Xperia? smartphone portfolio continues to gain momentum with customers and consumers worldwide," said Kunimasa Suzuki, President and CEO of Sony Mobile. ?"We are accelerating the integration and convergence with the wider Sony group to continue enhancing our offerings, and a more focused and efficient operational structure will help to reduce Sony Mobile's costs, enhance time to market efficiency and bring the business back to a place of strength."

In relation to the operational structure changes, Sony Mobile plans to reduce its global headcount by approximately 15 percent (approximately 1000 personnel, including consultants) throughout the financial years of 2012 and 2013 (i.e. by the end of March 2014) as the company seeks to increase operational efficiency, reduce costs and drive profitable growth.

Today Sony Mobile filed a redundancy notification ("varsel") with the Swedish authorities to notify them that the company expects around 650 employees across a number of functions at Sony Mobile in Lund to be affected by job closures. ?The remaining headcount reductions will be primarily consultants in Sweden. Lund will continue to be an important strategic site for Sony Mobile, with the main focus on software and application development.

Sony Mobile is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation, following Sony Corporation's acquisition of Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson's ?50% stake in Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB, completed on February 15, 2012.
