Video killed the interview star

Hamilton, ON, July 29, 2013 ? Job applicants interviewed through video conferencing come across as less likeable, a new study from the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University has found.

The study, conducted by Greg Sears and Haiyan Zhang when they were PhD students at DeGroote, shows that using video conferencing for job interviews disadvantages both employers and candidates.

With use of video conferencing growing?in recent surveys 50% up to 65% of employers have reported using the technology for job interviews?the DeGroote study raises cautions about widespread use of video conferencing in recruitment.

In simulated job interviews, candidates who were interviewed by video-conferencing were rated lower by interviewers and were less likely to be recommended for hiring. On the other side of the webcam, candidates also rated their interviewers as less attractive, personable, trustworthy and competent.

"Increasingly, video technology is being used in employment interviewing because companies feel it provides convenience and cost savings. Despite their growing use, our study shows that video conference interviews are not equivalent to face-to-face interviews," explains Sears, now an associate professor at the Sprott School of Business.

Accurate assessments of candidates and positive evaluations of interviewers are essential as organizations compete for talent. Candidates who evaluate their interviewers more positively are more likely to accept a job offer.

Study co-author Willi Wiesner, associate professor of human resources at DeGroote, says, "These findings suggest that using video conferencing can adversely affect both applicant reactions and interviewer judgments. Video conferencing places technological barriers between applicants and interviewers. Employers and applicants should work to reduce the barriers that arise through video conferencing and improve the interpersonal aspects of the interview process."

The researchers recommend that video conferencing be used only for preliminary screening interviews. Final selection of candidates should be conducted through face-to-face interviews.

The study is published in the journal Management Decision. The research was funded by the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

University of Texas students send yacht off-course with GPS exploit (video)

DNP University of Texas' yacht hack illustrates GPS signal vulnerability video

Students from the University of Texas gave us another reason not to mess with the Lone Star state: they'll hack your yacht. In cooperation with a luxury boat's owners, the Longhorns manipulated their $80 million vessel's nav system, covertly guiding it off-course -- all without the crew ever suspecting foul play. By transmitting spoofed global positioning system signals toward the craft, the students tricked its drivers into correcting a non-existent, three-degree course deviation, thus leading them off track. With their work done, the Texans believe this shows exactly how easy it is to exploit civil-band GPS signals. College kids may have conned the helm this time, but it isn't too far-fetched to think pirates could do the same. Our timbers are shivering just thinking about it.

Lithuanian teen sets record in swim worlds prelims

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? A year after her breakout performance at the Olympics, Ruta Meilutyte is even faster than before.

The 16-year-old Lithuanian set a meet record in morning heats of the 100-meter breaststroke at the world championships Monday with a quicker swim than the ones that got her gold in London.

Meilutyte hit the wall in 1 minute, 4.52 seconds, Jessica Hardy of the United States was second in 1:05.18 and Yuliya Efimova of Russia touched third in 1:05.24.

At the Olympics, Meilutyte won in 1:05.47, although she swam faster in the semifinals at 1:05.21.

Meanwhile in other prelims, American teenager Missy Franklin got her first individual event off to a strong start by leading the 100 backstroke in 59.13 seconds.

Defending champion Lotte Friis qualified first in the marathon-like 1,500 in 15:49.18, just ahead of American favorite and 16-year-old Katie Ledecky, who was 0.08 behind.

In a low-key 200 free without Olympic silver medalists Sun Yang and Park Taei-hwan, Robert Renwick of Britain qualified first in 1:46.88, Olympic champion Yannick Agnel of France advanced in sixth and defending champion Ryan Lochte reached the semifinals in ninth.

Also, Ashley Delaney of Australia led the men's 100 back in 53.60.

Four finals were scheduled for the evening session on Day 2 in the pool: the men's 100 breast, the women's 100 butterfly, the men's 50 fly and the women's 200 individual medley.

There could also be some more fireworks from Meilutyte.

If the Britain-based Lithuanian swims just 0.08 quicker in the semifinals later or in Tuesday's final, she'll break Hardy's world record of 1:04.45 set in 2009 at the height of the rubberized suit era.

However, Meilutyte doesn't have two-time defending champion Rebecca Soni to push her, as the American is taking the year off.

But Hardy appears in form.

"I blew my expectations out of the water already, so it's going to be fun," Hardy said. "That was just getting the first-race jitters out."

Franklin got her jitters out by leading off when the Americans won the 4x100 free relay Sunday. That was first up in her Michael Phelps-like load of eight events.

"It was a perfect way to start off the meet," Franklin said. "But I'm really excited to get some backstroke in. So 100 back is the perfect event to come off the relay from."

Katinka Hosszu of Hungary qualified second behind Franklin in 59.40 and Elizabeth Pelton of the U.S. was third in 59.94.

"Awesome. I'm good with that, 59.1 is definitely better than I wanted to be this morning," Franklin said.

Hosszu plans to scratch from this event to focus on racing China's Ye Shiwen in the 200 IM final.

Franklin won the 100 back in 58.33 at the London Games.

Can she approach the world record of 58.12 set by Britain's Gemma Spofforth in 2009?

"I haven't even thought about it," Franklin said. "I'm just going to go out there and swim and have fun. When you focus too much on a number you kind of lose what swimming is all about. So I'm just going to go out there and see what I can do."

Ledecky, however, is clearly eyeing Kate Ziegler's world record of 15:42.54 in the 1,500 ? a non-Olympic event.

"I definitely have a lot left in the tank," Ledecky said. "I just wanted to win my heat and swim a controlled race."

Ledecky won the 400 free in a dominating performance Sunday.

"I just carried the energy and excitement from last night into this morning and recovered well," she said.

USA vs Panama Live Stream Free Soccer: Watch Online Gold Cup 2013 Final CONCACAF Football

July 28, 2013|2:27 pm

The United States will have to complete their Gold Cup campaign without influential head coach Jurgen Klinsmann by their side. He has been banned from the sidelines in today's game after throwing a soccer ball in anger during the United States' semifinal match. Some will feel the punishment of missing the final is quite harsh, but Klinsmann will be disappointed at missing the final and will regret reacting in anger to a series of heavy tackles on his players from the opposition during that semifinal.

For Panama, they are in dreamland right now, as not many had expected them to get through to this year's final. They gained an emotional win over Mexico in their semifinal ? their second win over the Mexicans in this tournament alone following their opening game win against them.

The Panama and Mexico semifinal was a tense affair, and for long periods it was tough to see which way things would end up going, however, eventually a late goal saw Panama gain the victory that brings them to today's final against the United States.

The last time these two teams played in a Gold Cup final, the United States came out on top after winning a dramatic penalty shoot out. The United States will be hoping to make things a bit easier this time around and gain the win in regular time. However, Panama will be looking to complete their dream and cause another upset today, and gain revenge for their Gold Cup final loss to the USA in the past.

USA vs Panama takes place in the Gold Cup 2013 Final on Sunday afternoon with kick off at 4 p.m. ET, and all the action can be watched online through free live stream by clicking here.

3 dead when bus carrying teens crashes in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A bus carrying teenagers returning to Indiana from a church camp in Michigan crashed Saturday afternoon just minutes from home, killing three people and sending 26 others to hospitals, officials said.

The bus came speeding off of Interstate 465 in northern Indianapolis, about a mile from the Colonial Hills Baptist Church that passengers attended, struck a retaining wall as it rounded a curve and overturned. The campers were returning from Camp CoBeAc in northern Michigan, about six hours away.

The church's youth pastor had sent a tweet a couple of hours before the crash saying the group was expected to arrive at the church about 4:15 p.m., around the time the accident happened.

"They were not that far from home. That only adds to the tragedy," said Indianapolis Public Safety Director Troy Riggs.

The dead included a man and his wife, Riggs said. Authorities did not provide information about the third victim.

Riggs and Mayor Greg Ballard visited the crash scene, where clothing, pillows and seat cushions from the bus were scattered along with at least two shattered windows, before they headed to the church. Riggs said there was no indication that the driver had a medical emergency and called the accident "a great tragedy."

Ballard said investigators were taking measurements and examining the bus to determine the cause of the crash.

WTHR-TV reported the bus driver told witnesses his brakes failed. Indianapolis Fire Department Lt. Ato McTush said police and fire officials had not determined whether the church-owned bus, which was carrying 37 passengers plus the driver, had mechanical issues.

Duane Lloyd told WTHR that he heard a loud noise behind him as he was traveling near the intersection and saw the crash around 4:15 p.m.

"I heard a skid. I looked back. I see this bus in the air and people falling out of the bus," Lloyd said. "I could have gone my whole life without seeing that."

Karen Woodard, a member of Colonial Hills Baptist Church, cried as she stared at the wrecked bus.

"It's so terrible. I can't believe it," she said.

Indianapolis Fire Department said crews had to free five people who were trapped inside after the crash. Several people stopped to help before first responders could arrive, including one man who helped pull the driver out of the bus, the department said.

"People were stopping their cars. People were literally trying to lift the bus," Lloyd said. "You just try to do what you can do."

Fire officials said the injured included children and adults.

Nine teenagers were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, including one in critical condition. Three of those were treated and released, hospital spokeswoman Sally Winter said. She said 10 others, including nine teenagers and a toddler, were taken to Riley Hospital for Children. Seven of those teenagers were treated and released, Winter said.

Many of the patients were suffering head, arm and leg injuries, fire officials said.

Roads near the scene were closed, and authorities urged people to use caution in the area. A hazardous materials crew was cleaning up diesel fuel that spilled in the crash.

Outside the church, a yellow school bus with the church school's name was parked outside with piles of sleeping bags and suitcases nearby. Families hugged outside and talked quietly before going inside, where they met with Ballard and Riggs Saturday evening.

Ballard described the families as "remarkably positive" despite their sorrow.

"Some of the teenagers are hurting pretty bad and you can see that in their faces," he said.

Church member Jeff Leffew, 44, of Fishers, who had three daughters on the bus that crashed and a fourth on a second bus, said he was waiting to pick them up in the church parking lot when the second bus arrived. He said he knew immediately that something was wrong because the kids on the bus were screaming.

He went to the crash scene and found his three daughters with only bumps and bruises.

He called the crash scene "surreal."

"You're just praying that it's not as bad as it looks," he said.

North Korea military parades through Pyongyang

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? Goose-stepping soldiers, columns of tanks and a broad array of ominous-looking missiles poised on mobile launchers paraded through Pyongyang's main square on Saturday in a painstakingly choreographed military pageant intended to strike fear into North Korea's adversaries and rally its people behind young ruler Kim Jong Un on the 60th anniversary of the armistice that ended the Korean War.

The lavish assembly of weapons and troops is reminiscent of the marches held by the Soviet Union and China at the height of the Cold War. It is one of the few chances the world gets to see North Korea's military up close. Although Pyongyang frequently uses the occasion to reveal new, though not always operational, hardware, there didn't appear to be any new weapons in Saturday's parade. Its arsenal of missiles, however, was front-and-center.

Overlooking a sea of spectators mobilized in Kim Il Sung Square to cheer and wave flags, leader Kim Jong Un saluted his troops from a review stand. He was flanked by senior military officials, the chests of their olive green and white uniforms laden with medals. As fighter jets screamed overhead, a relaxed looking Kim smiled and talked with China's vice president. China fought with North Korea during the war and is Pyongyang's only major ally and a crucial source of economic aid. Kim did not make a speech.

Saturday's parade marks a holiday the North Koreans call "Victory Day in the Fatherland Liberation War," although the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce and the Korean Peninsula remains technically at war.

In Washington, President Barack Obama marked the day with a speech at the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the National Mall, saying the anniversary marks the end of the war and the beginning of a long and prosperous peace.

"Here today, we can say with confidence, that war was no tie, Korea was a victory," with 50 million South Koreans living in freedom and "a vibrant democracy" in stark contrast to dire conditions in the North, Obama said.

He said the U.S.-South Korea partnership remains "a bedrock of stability" throughout the Pacific region, and gave credit to the U.S. service members who fought all those years ago and to the men and women currently stationed there.

Kim's rule, which began in late 2011 after the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, has been marked by high tensions with Washington and Seoul. He has overseen two long-range rocket launches and a nuclear test that drew widespread condemnation and tightened U.N. sanctions.

North and South Korea have turned to tentative diplomacy in recent weeks, but March and April saw North Korean threats of nuclear war against Washington and Seoul in response to annual South Korean-U.S. military drills and U.N. condemnation of Pyongyang's February nuclear test, the country's third. Long-stalled North Korean nuclear disarmament talks show no sign of resuming.

Last year's parade in Pyongyang, held to commemorate the April celebrations of the 100th birthday of the late national founder Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Un's grandfather, created a buzz among military watchers when the North rolled out a mysterious long-range missile known abroad as the KN-08. Most outside observers now believe the missiles were mock-ups, but they were carried on mobile launchers that appeared to have been obtained from China, possibly against U.N. arms trade sanctions.

Choe Ryong Hae, the army's top political officer, said North Korea should be ready to fight to defend the stability the country needs to revive the economy. But his speech at Kim Il Sung Square was mild compared with past fiery rhetoric from Pyongyang attacking the United States and South Korea.

Meanwhile, in South Korea, President Park Geun-hye vowed not to tolerate provocations from North Korea ? Seoul says North Korean attacks in 2010 killed 50 South Koreans ? but she also said Seoul would work on building trust with the North. "I urge North Korea to give up the development of nuclear weapons if the country is to start on a path toward true change and progress," Park said in a speech.

North Korea is estimated to have a handful of crude nuclear bombs, but many analysts don't think it has yet mastered the technology needed to build warheads small enough to fit on long-range missiles.

About 200 people gathered in Seoul, some burning pictures of the North's ruling Kim dynasty, at a rally meant "to condemn the nuclear development and threatening strategy of the tyrannical regime of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un," said Park Chan-sung, an anti-North Korea activist.

Shin Eun-gyeong, who visited an exhibit on the armistice on Saturday at a recently opened history museum, said she wants the rival Koreas to be unified ? but as a democracy, not under North Korea's autocratic rule. "It's a real tragedy for Korea that we are still a divided nation," Shin said.

The North's parade tradition goes back to the founding of the country in 1948. Few countries ? including North Korea's communist models ? continue to trot out their military forces in public squares with such pomp and pageantry. But Pyongyang has stuck with them because its leaders believe they are a good way to show the world those things about the military they want to reveal, while at the same time sending a potent message domestically of the power of the ruling elite.

"The beauty of a parade is that weapons systems don't actually have to work in order to be impressive ? a missile launcher looks good even when the missile won't launch," said David Stone, an expert on the Soviet and Russian militaries at Kansas State University.

That can be risky, however.

Almost as soon as last year's parade was over, military experts around the world said they thought the stars of the show ? the long-range KN-08 missiles ? were mock-ups of a design that is still being perfected and probably couldn't actually fly, despite North Korea's claims that it has the capability to strike the United States with nuclear-tipped ICBMs.

"They certainly learned that they might lose some reputation by showing imperfect mock-ups," said Marcus Schiller, a private-sector aerospace engineer in Germany who is regarded as one of the world's leading authorities on North Korea's missile capabilities. "Better to show nothing and let the world know by 'leaked secret information' how dangerous they are."

Even so, analysts say the parades send important messages meant to signal strength to North Korea's people ? who are not privy to such outside analysis. As it rolled out its arsenal Saturday, military helicopters, jets in formation and other warplanes did flyovers. Later, thousands of civilians marched alongside festive floats, a departure from previous parades. A truckload of soldiers wore chest packs with nuclear symbols.

"After watching this parade, I feel our country could defeat anyone," said Ryang Un Ho, 84, a captain in the North Korean infantry during the war who sat in the hot sun with other veterans at the square for the two-hour spectacle.

Japan beats South Korea 2-1 to win East Asian Cup

Yoichiro Kakitani scored both goals, including the winner in stoppage time, as Japan beat South Korea 2-1 to win its first East Asian Cup title on Sunday.

Kakitani gave Japan the lead in the 25th minute, receiving a pass from Toshihiro Aoyama and beating South Korean goalkeeper Jung Sung-ryong for his second goal of the tournament.

The hosts leveled in the 33rd on Yun Il-lok's strike from the top of the area past Japan 'keeper Shusaku Nishikawa.

Kakitani scored again in the first minute of stoppage time, picking up a loose ball after an impressive save by Jung.

"This was a very important win for us," said Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni, whose team came entirely from the domestic J-League. "The players did a fantastic job."

Japan finished the tournament with seven points, two ahead of China, which beat Australia 4-3 earlier in the day.

Yu Dabao scored five minutes into the game for defending champion China but Australia equalized through Aaron Mooy's long-range effort in the 30th.

China regained the advantage in the 56th on a goal by Sun Ke and widened the lead to 4-1 through two quick goals from Yang Xu and Wu Lei.

Substitutes Adam Taggart and Mitchell Duke responded for Australia, which finished the tournament winless.

UNIONS IN DISGUISE? GOP Lawmakers Question Rise of 'Worker Centers'

Roughly 200 so-called "worker centers" across the country are representing employees who work in everything from the fast-food industry to the taxi business.?

But some key Republican lawmakers are asking if those centers are actually acting more like labor unions. The concern is that the rise of these groups has become a way around the rules that govern bona-fide unions -- like requirements to submit financial filings to the feds every year.?

House education committee Chairman John Kline, R-Minn., and Rep. Phil Roe, R-Tenn., sent a letter this week to newly confirmed Labor Secretary Thomas Perez requesting that he clarify the situation.?

"In the last decade, the line between so-called 'worker centers' and labor organizations has blurred. Today, many of these worker centers are dealing with employers directly on behalf of employees," they wrote.?

They cited the example of one such group lobbying, back in the late '90s, for increased minimum wages in restaurants in the Koreatown area of Los Angeles. The four-year campaign of pickets and boycotts was ultimately successful.?

But lawmakers want to know what makes one group a union, and another something else.?

"We're just asking the secretary to clarify what those things are. And it's very well spelled out if you read the law what it is. What you can and can't do and what your reporting requirements are and are not," Roe told Fox News.?

Alexandra Suh, executive director of the Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance in Los Angeles, defended its activities.?

"My understanding is that unions' main role is to seek to represent a body of employees at a specific workplace and, in an ongoing way, formally bargain and negotiate contracts with the employer on behalf of those individuals. KIWA does not play this type of role," Suh said.?KIWA was involved in seeking higher wages at Los Angeles restaurants.?

Others are convinced the unions are skirting the rules with these groups.?

A full-page ad from the Center for Union Facts has been running showing the AFL-CIO'S Richard Trumka, and then the same picture of him in a disguise as a "worker center" big shot.?

Many say worker centers do provide useful services such as job training and English-as-a-second-language classes.?

But the Heritage Foundation's James Sherk said "some worker centers are also being used by unions are front organizations, to advance their own agenda, rather than looking at a purely altruistic effort to benefit workers."?

This sort of system is so attractive because it is fairly cheap and easy to manage. There is no product involved for the affiliated businessman. It is not as easy as it first appears, however. It takes a committed effort if you want to develop a reliable income stream.

Make sure that your partners don't take advantage of cookies, and certainly don't do it yourself. At best, this is irritating to the visitor. You could possibly spread viruses or break the customer tracking chains.

Always disclose when you are using affiliate marketing and see how it affects your readers and visitors in a positive manner. Transparency is always appreciated, particularly in the field of affiliate marketing. If your readers understand the reasons you utilize affiliate marketing, they may be more positive and responsive to the links provided on your site.

Selecting an affiliate products company with several payment options should be high on your list, especially if you need a quick turn-around for your earnings. There are affiliate companies that only offer payment once you have reached a particular dollar amount, while others will direct pay you through a checking account or other online payment services.

As a time saving tip for affiliates who are dealing with many emails with instructions that need to be addressed, don't waste time continuing to go back to the emails to reread the message. Save time and be productive put them into a word document. By using the document as your reference, you can work more quickly and efficiently.

When visitors come to your sports-focused website, they are expecting information about sports. Providing affiliate links may prove to be unfruitful if the links are forwarding visitors to websites that do not pertain to sports. If your link is close to the website topic, your visitors are going to be more interested in it.

Paid advertising, such as Google Ads, is a good way to make money from affiliate marketing programs. Use targeted keywords in your ads to attract customers to your site.

When selecting prospective affiliates, do so with purpose and with a clear idea of who your target audience is. This allows you to drive traffic and connect with your target market through a sense of shared understanding.

Choose affiliate companies that are supportive and help their affiliates by sharing resources that can help sell their products. Generally, affiliate businesses are not stupid. They do research to learn what marketing techniques convert customers. Successful companies share their information with affiliates in an effort to create customized marketing campaigns to sell products.

If you employ banner ads try to put a question on it, some people will click and not be able to refuse clicking. Most people will be unable to leave without clicking on the banner. Reward the visitors by presenting discounts to those that answered the question correctly.

When you are reviewing a product, spice up your opinions with movies, pictures, and whatever else you can think of that will really make that product look good to others. You will be able to bring in more income with affiliate marketing if you go this route. These will help people see how great the product is and convince them to buy one. Be very precise and specific in your reviews. Buyers want to know everything there is to know about something before they buy it.

Knowing real time statistics is incredibly important. These will help you to track how much traffic your site is getting, and exactly how many of your products have been purchased.

A crucial element of affiliate marketing is obtaining as many backlinks as you can, but it can backfire on you if your visitors feel deceived by inappropriate content. A visitor will not be happy if the link they clicked on did not take them to the destination that he or she thought it would. This will speak of dishonesty to your visitors, no matter how well the strategy is planned.

You should not conclude that 100% commissions are a program scam. Take the time to read through it and you may find that there is no scam to it. There are legitimate companies that offer such programs. While you enjoy the 100 percent commission, the company makes money on subscriptions that follow the original purchase. This can greatly benefit you, so pay close attention to an offer similar to this.

You need to make sure that you remain relevant if you wish to find success with affiliate marketing. Keep up with your affiliates and what sort of promotions they may be offering. Check out the constantly evolving tools that will draw customers into your affiliate marketing goals.

Be upfront and disclose that you do make money when your readers buy from your affiliate link. Visitors to your site are likely savvy consumers; resist the temptation to cover up the nature of affiliate links. Early honesty will improve your chances of increasing repeat visits and affiliate customers.

Always try to push your goals further. One day you could turn this into a real profit opportunity. Keep on pressing forward, never let up on working hard, and you will see your profits continue to grow. It can be hard to get started but if you keep at it you can succeed.

Lake Bell's Wedding Registry and More Revealed

07/25/2013 at 05:15 PM EDT

Lake Bell

Daniel Robertson/Startraks

Lake Bell, 34, wrote, directed and stars as an underachieving vocal coach in the new comedy, In A World... and chatted with PEOPLE this week about "one last thing" ...

Last thing I lost
I lose my phone on a daily basis. I'm one of those people who could be holding my phone and frantically looking around, convinced someone stole it. And it's on my person.

Last gift I received
A dear friend just gave Scott [Campbell] and me a registry gift, the moka coffeemaker; it's old-school. The registry was a solid wedding tradition. I even had a black toilet on it.

Last back rub I gave
My husband and I both have back tension, so we're always trying to identify and locate. "Here?" "Lower." "Here?" "Lower, to the left." We always play the "Is it here?" game.

Last time I watched the sunset
Flying from coast to coast. It was like a Georgia O'Keeffe painting. I was nervous the pilot was going to get distracted because it was so beautiful, like, "Keep your eyes on the road, pal."

Ministry at center of Texas captives case

HOUSTON (AP) ? The former nonprofit operating out of the purple-trimmed, one-story brick home in north Houston apparently started with the best of intentions: to feed and shelter homeless individuals.

But Regina's Faith Ministries soon ran afoul of its philanthropic goals as it lost its nonprofit status, violated state licensing regulations and, according to authorities, ended up turning its shelter into a dungeon-like prison where three men say they were held against their will so their captor could cash public assistance checks.

Police said the men, who lived in the home's garage at least a year, were lured by promises of food and cigarettes. Police had initially indicated four men were held captive but later revised the number to three.

Walter Renard Jones, 31, has been charged with two counts of injury to an elderly individual and is being held in the Harris County Jail on bonds totaling $400,000. The three men, as well as another man and four women ? three with mental disabilities ? were discovered in the house last Friday. Authorities say the investigation isn't over.

Jones is the son of Regina Jones, who is listed in state records as one of the former nonprofit's directors. Walter Jones' attorney, Jerome Godinich Jr., did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Another of the ministries' directors, Henry Bolden, said he was shocked by last week's discovery.

"I thought they were doing good," said Bolden, who is the pastor of New Rock of Salvation Holiness Church in Houston.

The three men ?ages 80, 74 and 65 ? told authorities they were forced to live in the home's garage, which had locks on its doors, one chair, no bed or bathroom and a possibly malfunctioning air conditioner. Police say the men were given scraps to eat. They were hospitalized for malnutrition but have since been released and placed at an assisted living facility, police said.

Property records show the home is owned by Essie Mae Scranton, Regina Jones' mother. The brother of Regina Jones said their 81-year-old mother had nothing to do with the nonprofit or with the men found there.

"That's not no shelter," Karey Scranton said. "I don't know what my sister did or what she conjured up or whatever."

Various attempts to reach Regina Jones, 57, this week were unsuccessful. Court records show Jones, also known as Regina Nelson, was previously convicted of several theft charges.

Karey Scranton defended Walter Jones, his nephew.

"The boy would give the shirt off his back to help somebody. He's not no bad person," Scranton said. Court records show Walter Jones previously had been convicted of theft and marijuana possession charges.

Regina's Faith Ministries registered with the state as a nonprofit in December 2008. Bolden said Regina Jones, who was a member of his church, was already running the shelter when she approached him for help. The pastor said he bought 10 mattresses for the facility and sometimes would supply it with food, but had little else to do with it.

"I thought they were feeding them pretty good. Maybe I should have checked in there more," he said.

In 2010, Texas revoked the group's nonprofit status because of tax reporting issues.

The Coalition for the Homeless of Houston/Harris County, a nonprofit which coordinates various local efforts, had not heard of Regina's Faith Ministries before last week, said Marilyn Brown, the group's president and CEO.

Brown said some facilities call themselves group homes, though she said, "Some of them are more legitimate than others."

Regulation of such facilities, which provide personal care services such as feeding and dressing, falls to the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services. They are required to be state-licensed only if they provide services to four or more individuals, agency spokeswoman Cecilia Cavuto said.

The agency did investigate the Houston home in November 2011 and spoke with four residents. Cavuto said the four "expressed satisfaction" about how the home was run.

"So our staff did not see any conditions which concerned them related to the health and safety of the residents," she said.

However, the home was found to be in violation of licensure requirements. In a December 2011 letter, Regina Jones told the agency she would drop to three residents, thus no longer requiring a license.

Brown said the extreme conditions these men lived in are rare for such facilities.

She said the hope is that this case re-opens a conversation about gathering more detailed data on what happens to individuals after they use services by the Coalition's members. One of the men found in the home had stayed four nights at a Coalition shelter in August 2010, a review showed, but there was no other record of him.

"People fall into homelessness for many different reasons. ... It's often coupled with mental incapacities, physical disabilities. And so that person may not have the mental capability to recognize when something is questionable and so they do become vulnerable to those who would take advantage (or provide) unacceptable care such as these men found themselves in," Brown said.
