ST. PAUL, Minn. - Both Gov. Mark Dayton, a Democrat, and the Republicans who control Minnesota's Legislature say the top priority for the legislative session now well underway is creating jobs. But at Minnesota's Capitol, sharing goals doesn't always mean results.
Dayton has called for a bipartisan jobs package, and Republicans say they want that too. But their proposals are drastically different.
Republicans want to reduce and eventually eliminate the state's business property tax. They say that would send a bold signal to business owners that Minnesota wants them and the jobs they can create.
Dayton believes property tax relief should be spread more widely. He's pushing a $3,000-per-hire tax credit to businesses that bring on new employees, and a $775 million bonding bill and the Vikings stadium proposal to create construction jobs.
